CS EXCLUSIVE | COLOUR VISION

CV-SQUARE Corey James Hurley, otherwise known as COLOUR VISION, is an artist who we've found ourselves consistently impressed by over the past year. Both his music and his passion are infectious, and they shine through a combination of ever-present hustle and support of fellow artists, in addition to an overall stoked attitude that's impossible to ignore. He's made huge strides in 2014, putting out a slew of releases including a remix package for his single Sur Chic, reworks of La Roux, Overjoy, and Ten Walls, plus a handful of excellent mixes.

We've been looking to connect with Corey on a feature for awhile now, and at long last our schedules linked up. So today we're excited to bring you a brand new exclusive mix courtesy of the feel-good master himself, in addition to a great interview. Grab some paradise vibes and hear about the dance scene down in Palm Springs, his thoughts on the current Tropical trend, what's on deck for the new year and more. As always, enjoy!

Interview:

Caveman Sound: You put out a good amount of mixes, we like to think this one’s special though, tell us a bit about it.

COLOUR VISION: Indeed! I have always looked up to tastemakers like the magician who deliver fresh tunes on regular basis. I think it paints a much bigger picture of who they are as individuals and what inspires their own music, as well as exposing people to a new world of sounds. This mix is special for me because it contains some unreleased remixes that i finished this year & hints at where i’m headed stylistically in 2015 ft. some of my favorite internet friends.

CS: You’re currently based in Palm Springs, a place where the dance scene seems to be quickly growing — what is it about the vibe there that makes it so special?

CV: Palm Springs is an amazing city & i’ve really enjoyed my time in this magical place. Although the local scene seems a little behind in their dance music choices, there are a few brave DJs (shout out to ALL NIGHT SHOES) pushing ‘Feel Good’ sounds to the masses and setting things in motion for a strong nu-disco & deep house scene. Luckily every weekend there is a good amount of tourists coming to soak in the sun & tropical atmosphere from San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, etc. who really know their underground dance music and surprise me with stellar requests on the regular. There is really something special in the air out here.. coupled with a very progressive mayor who is helping put Palm Springs on the map again.

CS: How does living there inspire your own style specifically?

CV: For me the move was about a disconnect from the San Diego DJ scene that i have been working in since i was 21 to focus on music exclusively. I’ve had nearly a year of isolation in Paradise DJing Poolside for people who legitimately came to relax & enjoy themselves on vacation. It’s been a HUGE pleasure & inspiration waking up to the surreal desert scapes and the endless rows of Palm Trees daily. To be a little more specific I’ve been playing much slower than in a club setting & blending my love of indie rock vocals with deep tropical elements with an 80’s flair.

CS: As followers of your Instagram, we’ve noticed you post a heap of art from all types of artists, who are some of your favorites?

CV: When I’m not making tropical tunes & drinking piña coladas, I am a freelance graphic designer and I’m always on the hunt for inspirational work from other graphic artists. My Instagram allows me to create a visual identity for my music that I think accurately represents the sound that I love. One of my favorite artists that I feature regularly is YOKO HONDA @YOKOPIUM who makes beautiful 80’s inspired hand-drawn pieces & patterns.

CS: Throughout 2014 we saw the explosion of Tropical-inspired dance music, how do you see this trend growing and shifting in the new year?

CV: “Tropical House” really exploded on the scene this year thanks to a few larger EDM blogs jumping on the bandwagon. It’s really great to see guys like Kygo & Thomas Jack break into the mainstream & I think it is making a huge impact on the amount of listeners interested in Tropical Deep House & Tropical Disco which really opens doors for aspiring producers like me. HOWEVER, as with any trend I’m seeing A TON of really terrible music (in my opinion) coming out from former Progressive House producers “now making tropical house” which really worries me…I sense the birth of “BIG ROOM TROPICAL HOUSE” which really could be good or bad, the future will tell. I feel really fortunate that I am in a position to contribute to this rapidly growing movement and introduce my own style to the mix.

CS: You’ve established a label and blog, PARADISE ULTD., that fosters and encompasses the tropical niche, can you give us some insight into the concept behind it?

CV: PARADISE ULTD. is my passion project that will go live at some point in 2015 involving some of my FAVORITE up & coming tropical producers that I’ve been sharing music with the past few years. Me and a lot of producers have had singles rejected from labels that “made sense” without anywhere to release them, and unfortunately a lot are simply uploaded to Soundcloud & forgotten. I really want the label to be an outlet for these amazingly talented boys & girls to reach a wider audience. We’ve launched the website which has been well received & the next phase is the official label that will reach all digital stores internationally. I have been collecting demos for a few months now & am putting together our first release which will be a compilation of lower bpm tropical nu disco tunes, but I also have a few singles that I’ve signed already as a follow up that I am REALLY excited to share with the world. BUT TO BE HONEST…getting my hands on these tunes before anyone is more than worth the effort of organizing & developing the project.

CS: Who are your top five artists to keep an eye on in 2015?

CV: RAMBO V, Boys Get Hurt, Eau Claire, JackLNDN, DWYR.

CS: This may be obvious at this point, but — your music is the soundtrack to what city?

CV: My music has strong roots in the Aussie & French House scenes and I immediately connected with their vibes growing up in beautiful Southern California. Different singles represent different locales & times in my life, and I really try to let my environment influence my music as much as I influence my environment.

CS: Last but not least, what have you got on deck for the new year?

CV: 2015 will really usher in big changes in my production schedule for the COLOUR VISION project and I hope to work on some bigger remixes, singles, & finish a multi-track EP that I can perform LIVE ft. my own vocals. I’ve never been more focused or passionate about my music & I’m really excited to share remixes for JESUSDAPNK, FSQ, TONI DISCO & drop my next single ‘HAUS PARTY” with remixes which will come out via ON THE FRUIT recordings.
